Living Green in Your Apartment

Today we are more aware of the environment than ever before.  We know that living green isn’t difficult but does require a little thought and commitment. Below are a few green ideas that are simple to implement as well as making a positive impact on your health and the world in which you live.

Clean Green

White vinegar, baking soda, hydrogen peroxide and lemon juice are all natural products that clean like a pro. They are biodegradable and non-toxic to us and the environment. If you don’t have the time or desire to make your own cleaning products, there are many green, healthy products in the stores to chose from.

Add Some Green

Plants are an excellent way to filter and clean indoor air. By adding easy care indoor plants to your apartment you are removing the car exhaust that seeps into your space or the synthetic fabric that off-gases from furniture. Plus plants make you feel happy and add to the decor of your place.

If you are up for the challenge, you could add an herb and vegetable container garden to your back porch. Growing your own food is the ultimate in being Earth conscious.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

A great way to impact the environment is to reduce the amount of junk mail you receive. Junk mail is a major contributor to the deforestation of our planet. By opting out of mail solicitations you don’t want or need you are saving trees, energy and resources.

Another positive way you can be green is to use reusable bags when you shop.

Estimates state that people use a trillion single-use plastic bags around the world every year. These bags end up as litter on our streets and in our water, plus energy is needed to manufacture these bags. With only a 12-minute average use time it makes sense to eliminate them whenever possible.

You may wonder, “Can’t we recycle these bags?’

Recycling isn’t as easy as it sounds. Communities that recycle these bags found recycling didn’t make ecological or financial sense. The bags jam the machinery, causing costly repairs and work stops. Plus only 4% of single-use bags end up recycled. These problems prompted communities, including Oak Park, to no longer accept plastic bags as part of their recycling program.  So, when you use a sustainable bag you eliminate the need for single-use plastic bags. Less need means less production, and the world gets a little greener.

Oak Park Apartments is 30 Years Green

Here at Oak Park Apartments we feel a responsibility to protect our vintage properties and our environment.  Over the 30 plus years of being in the apartment management business we have tried to be good stewards of our buildings and our Earth. Here are some of the green improvements that we have done over the years: added and upgraded building insulation, installed energy efficient windows and appliances, switched toilets, shower heads and faucets to water saving models, updated heating and cooling systems, computerized heating systems for efficiency and added energy saving CFL and LED lighting to all of our properties.  Not only do we think these improvements are important but the Village of Oak Park thinks so too.  Oak Park Apartments has twice been awarded the VOP’s Green Award!

If we all do our part we can make a difference everyday in our world!
